I Am the Messenger
by Markus Zusak

I Am the Messenger introduces you to Ed Kennedy, a taxi cab driver living an unfulfilled life in the slums of Sydney, Australia. Standing in queue at the bank one day, Ed and his friend Marv end up as hostages in an armed robbery. However, in Ed’s words, the gunman is “useless,” and as the gunman tries to flee the scene, by some stroke of stupidity (or luck), Ed is able to apprehend him and becomes an accidental hero. Soon after this, Ed starts to receive different playing cards in the mail— each one leading Ed to different tasks to perform and different people to help throughout the city, some easier accomplished than others. Naturally, the source of the cards remains anonymous for the majority of the novel, leaving you to wonder who’s behind it all— and why they chose Ed to be their messenger.
